Aldeburgh |
THE upmarket seaside town of Aldeburgh is often overlooked
by cruising yachtsmen who might be put off by a tricky approach to
the mouth of the River Oare and the long inland trip up the River
Alde.
But once snug on a mooring or anchorage off Slaughden Quay, just
to the south of the town, you will find that Aldeburgh is definitely
worth a stay.
There are plenty of good pubs, restaurants, supermarket, trendy
shops, a cinema (in a Tudor-style building!) and two very popular
fish and chip shops. Both chippies draw long queues in summer but
yacht crews tend to favour the queue which goes past a pub so that
they can take turns to nip in for a pint of Adnams ale.
You can also stretch your legs on some good strolls around the
town. For a longer walk take the coast footpath to Thorpeness to
visit The Meare, a large boating lake with excellent cafe, then
head inland to see the windmill, the House in the Clouds (a water
tower camouflaged as an extremely lofty house) then head back to
Aldeburgh along a path that was once the railway line.
Don't be tempted to follow the example of one yachtsman
sailing offshore who had a sudden craving for a lunch of whitebait
and a pint of the local beer, Adnams. He dropped anchor off the
beach, rowed ashore and strolled half-soaked into the Cross Keys
pub in full sailing gear.
The pub staff didn't bat an eyelid, but the yachtsman
later earned a ticking off for mooring in an area where the local
fishing boats are hauled off and on the beach.
More information about Aldeburgh will appear here soon.
